Date: ASAP About the Position Job Summary: The Surgical First
Assistant is responsible for assisting the surgeon under direct and
indirect supervision throughout preoperative, intraoperative, and
postoperative duties and procedures always. The surgical assistant
provides aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other
intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out
a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. This
position has no supervisory responsibilities and reports directly
to the staff Operating Room nurse(s) in the Operating Room or
Procedure Room in which it is assigned and to the Clinical
Director. Formal Education/Training: High school diploma or GED
certificate CPR certification Previous First Assist Experience or
one year Scrub Tech Experience Preferred Experience: Certified
Surgical First Assistant (CSFA), Certified Surgical Assistant
(CSA), and Surgical Assistant-Certified (SA-C) ASC experience
Qualifications: Ability to collaborate cooperatively with
co-workers, managers, patients, visitors, vendors, families, and
physicians. Ability to make decisions and solve problems. Ability
to promote a positive facility image with physicians, patients,
visitors, vendors, and the public. Job Duties: Effectively
organized time, equipment, supplies and ensures needed items are
readily available in the assigned OR and Procedure Room. Assess the
patients surgical site in Pre Op Holding area to better aid in
positioning. Facilitates the safe positioning of the patient
according to the surgeons preference, the patients anatomical and
physiological limits, and surgical procedure to be performed.
Assists circulator and anesthesia provider in preparation of the
patient: Foley catheter placement, tourniquet application,
placement of intravenous catheters, cricoid pressure application
and other procedures as needed. Performs specific tasks according
to individual surgeon preference utilizing appropriate techniques
including but not limited to: incision and layered closure of
surgical sites, providing exposure, achieving hemostasis by means
of injection, manual, and topical methods, and application of
appropriate energy sources Manipulation and dissection/removal of
tissues Aides in implanting, securing, and/or removal of devices
and drains. Applying dressing material specific to procedure.
Applies any other specific dressing material - splints or casts.
Assesses skin integrity. Assists in transfer of the patient and
follows the patient to recovery if needed or directed by surgeon
For the Surgical Assistant who has appropriate training also
performs under surgeon supervision other procedures including but
not limited to: graft and implant preparation. Performs additional
duties as delegated by the surgeon in cooperation with state and
local policy. Provides comfort and reassurance to the patient and
promotes privacy and dignity. Confirms that proper aseptic and
sterile techniques and procedures are used according to accepted
standards of practice. Assists in managing inventory of supplies,
drugs, and equipment to maintain availability and stock levels in
the areas assigned. Assists in keeping physician preference cards
updated. Maintains current knowledge of clinical procedures.
Assists in the cleaning and turnover of OR and Procedure Room
between cases. Performs other duties as requested. Working
Conditions: Well-lit, well -ventilated area with complicated
equipment, some of which is hazardous in nature. Exposure to
bloodborne pathogens and other potentially infectious material
(OPIM) and chemical hazards. Requirements Ability to sit and stand
for prolonged periods; ability to walk. Ability to push, pull, lift
and position equipment and patients. Ability to reach overhead and
to reach low. Physical strength for using equipment and performing
patient care activities. Visual and auditory acuity. Ability to
