Nurse Revised 11/2025 Credentials: Current valid license by the
State of Tennessee Department of Health Board of Nursing
Qualifications: Must hold a current and valid Licensed Practical
Nurse (LPN) license. CPR and First Aid certification required.
Experience in pediatric or school nursing preferred. Strong
communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Role
Summary: The School Nurse plays a vital role in supporting the
health and wellness of students in a school-based setting. This
position is staffed exclusively by Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs)
who provide direct care, health education, and support for
students, staff, and families. The nurse works collaboratively with
school personnel to promote a safe and healthy learning
environment. Reports directly to the Supervisor of Health Services
and School Principal Key Responsibilities: Specialized Skills &
Expectations Must be able to emotionally and physically support
students with various disabilities, including but not limited to:
Cerebral palsy Intellectual disabilities Developmental delays
Autism spectrum disorders Seizure disorders Demonstrate:
Flexibility in adapting to changing situations and work orders
Respect, compassion, and care for children Commitment to
confidentiality, documentation, and safety Ability to work
efficiently and effectively in dynamic environments Must be able
to: Work in a variety of school settings, often with frequent
distractions and interruptions Provide own transportation during
the performance of duties Student Health Services Provide first aid
and emergency care to students and staff. Administer prescribed
medications and treatments in accordance with physician orders and
district policy. Monitor and manage chronic health conditions
(e.g., asthma, diabetes, allergies, adrenal insufficiency).
Maintain accurate health records and documentation. Provide health
related updates on students for staff and parents in compliance
with HIPAA and FERPA guidelines Health Referrals Identify health
concerns and refer students to appropriate healthcare providers or
resources. Health Education & Promotion Educate students and staff
on hygiene, nutrition, and disease prevention. Support classroom
health education initiatives as needed. Collaboration &
Communication Communicate with parents/guardians regarding student
health needs. Collaborate with teachers, counselors, and
administrators to support student well-being. Participate in
Individualized Education Program (IEP) and 504 Plan meetings when
health-related accommodations are needed. Compliance & Safety
Ensure compliance with state health regulations and district
policies. Monitor immunization records and follow up on required
documentation. Support infection control measures and emergency
preparedness protocols. Physical Demands The employee must have the
physical strength to independently lift and transfer children up to
50 pounds and assist with those over 50 pounds. Must be able to
operate equipment such as wheelchairs and orthotic/prosthetic
devices. Exposure to loud noises, foul odors, bodily fluids,
temperature changes, and occasionally combative children is
expected. Continued Education Must maintain continuing education as
required by the Tennessee Department of Health Board of Nursing for
licensure Complete Professional Development requirements as
outlined by MCS guidelines. Terms of Employment: Salary and
benefits recommended by the Finance and Administrative Service
Director and approved by the Director of Schools; 200-day calendar.
