Medical-Surgical experience Description: The unit has 54 beds with
a dedicated focus on orthopedic and spine patients. Patient ratios
are 1:5-6 for RNs and 1:12-15 for Patient Care Technicians. RN and
LPN teams manage a total of 10 patients. Each hall is staffed with
2-3 RNs and 1 LPN, depending on staffing and census. Patient Care
Technicians are available as needed. Unit secretaries work until 8
PM on weekdays. Equipment includes Alaris pumps, remote telemetry,
continuous pulse oximetry, and specialty beds. The documentation
system used is Meditech. Staffing requires at least one weekend
shift within a 4-week period. Floating may occur based on unit
discretion. Candidates should have at least 1 year of RN experience
in the medical-surgical setting. The patient population includes
medical-surgical, orthopedic, spine, trauma, and psych medical hold
patients. Advanced skills needed include thorough assessment,
prioritization, critical thinking, and time management. Procedures
performed include post-catheterizations, laparoscopy,
thoracentesis, and other medical-surgical procedures. The team has
a supportive culture with a focus on communication and
collaboration. Flexible scheduling options are available. New
technology includes bladder scanners and advanced EKG machines. The
unit is known for its teamwork and a high level of staff
tenure.
